No Indonesia for Gaga

Lady Gaga is a pop star who is certainly not afraid to go down the ‘controversial’ route. We have discussed some of her eye-raising outfits in this blog before. Famously one thinks about the famous ‘meat dress’ – a garment made entirely out of meat products. But it isn’t just about the materials used in the clothes that she wears. She is also following, to a certain extent, in the path of a long line of female pop stars that like to dress provocatively – think Madonna and Britney Spears. The simple reason is this: sex sells. Men just love to see a beautiful girl wearing skimpy clothing. But Ms. Gaga’s provocative sense of fashion seems to have rebounded on her in her recent tour plans. Indonesia has forced her to cancel her planned shows in the country due to security concerns – apparently a group of Muslim extremists threatened to use force to prevent her from playing.

When you want to buy a gift for someone who you know is very much into fashion, clothes and accessories, a good idea is to look at what kind of fashion is worn by their favourite celebrities. You could always go for the safe options, something like ties for men, and scarves for women, but these kind of gifts can be kind of boring – I am reminded of a comedy sketch where someone is bought a tie, and opens a closet to reveal hundreds of identical ties already in there. If you look at what their favourite celebrities like to wear, you can get more of an idea of what clothes they are into, and you can therefore get a bit more creative. Another good idea is to simply buy a gift card for one of their favourite fashion stores and let them pick something using that.

The biggest and best fashion designers certainly have an enviable job. They get to create any clothing designs that happen to pop into their head, and have the power and influence to be able to use the best materials and manufacturers to create designs for the hottest celebrities. But it normally takes a while to get into this position – or a lot of luck. Most designers have managed to claw their way up from lower positions, and this means that there is at least a chance for everyone that wants to become a designer to give it a shot. There are plenty of useful websites, magazines and books that can teach you not only the practical skills needed to become a successful designer, but also about the business itself and how to make it. Some institutes have also started to offer courses in fashion design, so there are plenty of options!

Getting the Look

If you really like the look of a certain celebrity – or indeed anyone else that you know – and you really want to try to achieve this look yourself, it is actually quite easy to find out what tricks they have used for their style. There are thousands of style websites out there, many of which have a ‘celebrity’ section in which they reveal tips and tricks used by celebrities to create a certain look. However, without a good stylist you are forced to try to try to create the look on yourself, and this almost never works out as well as when you have a great stylist working for you. So why not save yourself the trouble, book an appointment with a professional, and really treat yourself to an awesome look, professionally done. Even if you don’t have that awesome silk dress that your favourite celebrity has, you can still easily get something very close to their style.

Two Sides of the Coin

It must be really annoying to be a really famous celebrity sometimes. Of course, on the one hand, if you’re a famous actor or actress you usually have lots of money, you can eat at the best restaurants, go to the nicest places and take the most expensive holidays. But all of this freedom and opportunity comes with a price – a price which, paradoxically, also means that this very freedom is quite restricted. All of us ‘normal’ people may not be able to afford to go to all of the awesome places that rich celebrities can go to, but something that we can do is go out into the city without worrying about being recognised and followed around by hordes of people. We also don’t have to worry about not looking great when we go out, because our picture isn’t going to appear in a celebrity magazine under an insulting title.

Movie Night for the Royals

Prince William and Kate Middleton are probably one of the most famous couples in the world today, along with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and David and Victoria Beckham. There is not much that they do in public that doesn’t invite a swarm of photographers and celebrity reporters to catalogue their every move. Very recently, for example, they attended a movie premiere of Disney’s new film African Cats, and as expected the photographers and reporters were in attendance to capture their every move. Middleton is known as a fashion icon, and she certainly didn’t disappoint this time. She wore a beautiful dress by Matthew Williamson with smart black high heels. The prince wore a fantastic-looking dark suit, with a white shirt and a reddish tie. Not even the rain could dampen their image together!

Knitting For The Win!

Recently, I have noticed quite a lot of male celebrities wearing knitted clothing. Now, I believe that knitwear is something that never really goes down in popularity too much, because it is far too useful. It’s something that just bubbles along ‘under the surface’ of the fashion world, without making itself too visible, but always with a strong presence, no matter how surreptitious this presence might be. Knitted clothes are awesome – they are very warm, they look really good, and they are made largely with natural materials, which appeals to a huge number of people today – given our modern interest in all things ‘green’. Like many things, the style of knitwear men wear, and its effect, is largely dependent on the context of the entire outfit. Pair knitted clothes with the right things, and it will really look great.

Negative Guidance

In this blog, I often talk about how you can look to celebrities such as pop stars and actors/actresses in order to see what the latest fashions are, what’s going to be popular or the next best thing, and for other style tips. But something that is equally true is the very opposite of this. In other words, you can also fairly often look to celebrities for examples of what not to do when it comes to making strange fashion choices. I’m sure that we’ve all been there – we’ve maybe seen something in a shop, or thought up some awesome new style that at the time seems like a idea of unparalleled genius, but later, once we’ve had the time to really think it through it turns out to actually be a rather terrible idea. The thing is that, unlike celebrities, the rest of us are not constantly under surveillance by the paparazzi, and therefore our bad choices are easily ignored and forgotten. It’s tough at the top!

Personal Styles

Sometimes when you see a famous celebrity looking amazing, wearing an outfit that you think just looks so fantastic, you cannot help yourself but to try to achieve the style yourself. You immediately start planning to rush out and buy those cute low boots, or those cool looking sunglasses, and you assume that they will look as good on you as they did on the celebrity. But you should always remember that just because the style worked on Kate Beckinsale, it does not necessarily mean that it’s going to work in the same way when you try it. Now, don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying that celebrities have an innate ability to look more stylish than the rest of us ‘normal’ people. But it is certainly true that they have professional and talented stylists working for them that will pick styles that they know will work. Different styles work differently on different people – it’s entirely possible that something will look great on you, but will make Angelina Jolie look ridiculous!
