Face Types

Everyone reading this article probably already knows about the ‘face shape’ method of deciding on a hairstyle that suits you well. Just in case you don’t know about it already, this theory essentially groups people into various categories of ‘facial shape’. These shapes include oval, oblong, heart shaped and square. The idea is that certain hairstyles are more suited to certain of these facial categories, based on the things that these hairstyles accentuate or de-emphasise for a person. You can find out what particular facial shape you have very easily by visiting certain websites. And once you have this information, a good way to make use of it is to find celebrities that share the same shape as you, and see what hairstyles work well for them!

Sexy Stockings

Sometimes it’s really nice to get all dressed up when you go out for the night. It’s nice to be able to feel really attractive and sexy, and probably one of the sexiest items of clothing out there are stockings. These can really accentuate the beautiful shape and smoothness of a woman’s legs, and they can boost your confidence a huge amount – after all how you look can very often affect how you feel. If you look your best, you are going to feel a lot better than if you go out wearing old, torn, dirty clothes. And celebrities know how stockings can make you look great – just check out pictures of Catherine Zeta-Jones or Kate Winslet wearing them to see how good they can look. Of course, for these actresses their image is extremely important, so they are going to try to look as good as they possibly can – stockings are clearly the way to go!

Unique Styles

Pop stars seem to have a tendency to create their own very unique styles – far more than famous people from other professions such as acting or sports. Sure, you get the odd actor or actress that have styles of their own, such as Helena Bonham Carter, but the majority of celebrities in the acting world tend to go for more traditional fashion styles like haute couture designer clothing. But just think about all of the (usually female) pop stars that have made controversial headlines in the world of fashion. Famously, one thinks of Britney Spears shaving her head a while back, or about Lady Gaga’s often very interesting style choices. Katy Perry, for example, has just done a photography shoot for her appearance in Teen Vogue magazine, sporting her striking blue hair colour. Of course, pop stars are expected to present a ‘personality’ on stage, whereas actors and actresses normally present someone else’s personality.

Off Days

We are so used to seeing our favourite celebrities wearing expensive, designer clothing that it is very easy to forget sometimes that they don’t wear this kind of stuff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You might see Angelina Jolie wearing diamond encrusted gowns and shoes worth thousands of dollars on the red carpet at a movie premiere, or Brad Pitt wearing an awesome Armani suit at a charity event, but it’s important to remember that these kind of events are always going to bring out the showy side of the rich and famous, because to a certain extent, this is what keeps them popular, famous and wealthy. If you look a bit further, you can find plenty of examples of what celebrities wear when they are not on camera – sportswear, old t-shirts and so on – that show us that they are just human after all.

Costume Design Beginnings

Today, we seem to take it for granted that movie stars are often going to look very glamorous, with great-looking costumes, designer dresses, amazing shoes, awesome hairstyles and so on. But what most people don’t realise is that this was really not always the case. We are so used to seeing Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw wearing ridiculously expensive designer gowns, or classic movie stars of the past wearing glamorous dresses that we don’t think at all about the very beginnings of the movie industry. In the first few years of the movie business, actors and actresses usually just wore their own clothes. Costume design was non-existent. Although nowadays we take it for granted that the costume designers will have a substantial effect on the ‘look’ of a movie and therefore on the audience’s perception of it, for the first years of films, the concept of costume design did not even exist!

Setting an Image

It’s strange how the roles that actors and actresses play that make them famous often have such a huge effect on how they are perceived by the general public. Sometimes this results in them being ‘type-cast’ for certain types of role. I remember seeing the late, great Leslie Nielsen in one of his earlier roles in a non-comedy film and I couldn’t really take him seriously after having watched him for years in all of the awesome comedy movies that he made. After watching actress Keira Knightley play refined, ‘lady-like’ characters in corsets and fine shoes in many movies, such as Pride and Prejudice, this is the image that I automatically picture when I hear her name. But in a recent photo-shoot, she seems to be deliberately trying to avoid this association. In a shoot seemingly designed to show off a ‘wilder’ side, Knightley is wearing leather, smoking and just generally looks more ‘dangerous’ than she has done before.

Jennifer Lawrence

These days there always seems to be some big new movie or movie franchise coming out that is the next big thing, being featured in all of the newspapers, on all of the TV commercials, billboards and so on. Not that I am saying that this is a bad thing – we’ve had things like the Harry Potter franchise and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, both of which I think are definitely worth seeing. The latest movie to be given a huge amount of publicity is The Hunger Games – a dystopian science-fiction movie based on a popular book. One of the stars of this movie is a newish young actress called Jennifer Lawrence who has, like many young actresses nowadays, become something of a fashion icon due to her high profile in movies like this. She obviously has a great sense of fashion, or a brilliant stylist, because she has never put a foot wrong so far.

Positive Association

One of the best ways that clothing designers and manufacturers have found to sell their clothing products seems to be to find a famous, easily recognisable and popular face to associate with their products. Celebrity endorsements for products are big business, and the most famous and well-loved celebrities can very easily demand big bucks just to be seen wearing a particular fashion item. And this demand goes up even further if the celebrity wears the item to a large-scale public event, where millions of people will see the choice made by the celebrity in question. Many, many things can be endorsed by celebs – from a push up bra to a dress, from hats to shoes – because the designers that produce these products know that whatever we the public see popular public figures wearing, we are likely to rush out and buy ourselves.

Paddy’s Day

Well, St. Patrick’s Day has been and gone again – that holiday when it’s time to drink and be merry. It’s the time when , traditionally, thousands of people all over the world get together to raise a few drinks to St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. I find it interesting how this day has caught on so successfully in so many places. Of course, it has very little to do with St. Patrick himself, and a great deal to do with friends getting together to have drinks with one another – not a bad thing by any means! The colour of St. Patrick – and Ireland – has come to be green and you are therefore likely to see hordes of people walking the streets dressed in green – or with giant green comedy hats on. Someone else who seemed to have gotten into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit is none other than Kate Middleton. This last weekend she wore a beautiful green coat, with a clover pin and a shamrock flower, as she continued the royal tradition of greeting the Irish guards.

Celebrity Off Days

Lots of people like to get their fashion ideas, their new trends and styles and their hairstyle ideas from celebrities – just search for all of the celebrity fashion guides, websites and blogs that are spread all over the internet. Of course, this interest is at its greatest when there is some kind of large-scale event going on with lots of celebrities in attendance. For example, there’s always a huge crowd of fashion reporters at the red carpet on Oscars night, asking that familiar question – “so who are you wearing?” But something that is very important to remember is that these events are occasions when celebrities make a huge effort, and spend a large amount of time and money on making sure that they look as good as possible, with designer dresses and talented, expensive hair stylists and make-up artists on hand. If you really want to know how to look good every day, you need to look for pictures of these celebs on their ‘off days’ when they aren’t making a huge effort, see who still looks amazing in a sweatshirt and sports pants and use these more genuine images to create your style.
