Movie Style

Movies and television shows often have an undeniable impact on us, particularly with regard to the clothes that we wear, and the trends and styles that we adopt. I think that this has something to do with the celebrity culture that is prevalent in our society – actors and actresses are, after all, some of the biggest celebrities in the world, in terms of their fame and influence. And as movies are often very stylised, in order to give a certain look and feel to them – you can see how they can very easily be influential in terms of style. Just think about all of the long leather jackets and stylised sunglasses that suddenly popped up everywhere after The Matrix was released. And if a famous movie star starts to style his hair in a new, interesting way, you can bet that many guys will have copied the look in a few days.

Vuitton sues the Hangover

One of the most anticipated big comedy movies of the last year or so was The Hangover II, due to the success of the original film (a great movie that you should check out if you haven’t done so already). Personally, I watched this movie for two reasons. Firstly, it’s hilarious seeing those guys trying to extract themselves from the awkward position that their drunken exploits have got them into. Secondly, it has actually also got some great fashion in it. Various suits, shoes and sunglasses are seen throughout the movie. In fact, the reason I’m writing about the movie here is that the movie is being sued by fashion giant Louis Vuitton because it featured a fake Vuitton bag. This has got to be the strangest news that I’ve heard for a while – you would have thought the producers of the movie would have thought about that before.

Lingerie Museum

In Los Angeles, or more specifically in Hollywood, just a few blocks away from the famous Chinese Theatre, there is a rather garish and large building. It is painted grey and pink, and stands out rather distinctly from the surrounding buildings. This unique building is called Frederick’s of Hollywood, and is a very famous and very distinguished lingerie store. Here you can buy an extremely wide range of different lingerie styles and types. But what is particularly cool and unique about this store, and what makes it suitable for this blog, is the so-called ‘Celebrity Lingerie Hall of Fame’. Here one can walk about and view their exhibits, which consist of lingerie worn by the rich and powerful at important events. Some examples include a top worn by Madonna, the boxer shorts worn by Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump and a corset worn by Ingrid Bergman. Check it out if you’re ever in the area.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie is one of the most famous actresses working today. Actually, scratch that, she is one of the most famous people alive today. As well as her acting accolades, she has also been called the world’s most beautiful woman, a title which has only added to her fame. This is at least partially due to the excellent fashion and style choices that she makes when she appears in public. Her marriage to Brad Pitt, a man regularly featured on ‘sexiest men’ lists and articles, has also contributed to her massive public image and presence. Jolie and Pitt have recently appeared together at the Producers Guild Awards in Beverly Hills. Angelina dressed in a full-length black gown with floral patterns and a thigh-high slit. She also wore some great rose gold jewellery.

Colin Farrell

Colin Farrell is one of those people that just really annoy you with how good they look, and with how apparently little effort he needs to look so good. He also has that Irish charm, and the women love him. I may not be able to help you with the charm, but there are a few things that you can do try to emulate at least some of the things that make him into such a great-looking and desirable man. Firstly, Colin usually goes for that sexy, slightly unshaven look that is pretty popular nowadays. It gives him the sense of just a hint of danger, something that women love. Colin also loves to wear hats – caps, fedoras, you name it. He also loves to wear a lot of jewellery; necklaces, bracelets, earrings. This adds somewhat to his ‘bad boy’ image, along with his sexy stubble.

Golden Globes ’12

So last night was the Golden Globes in Los Angeles – an event always packed to the brim with some of the biggest celebrities with the most star power in the world. And fashion is always a big deal at these events; the reporters always line the red carpet to see which fashion designers are being worn by the various celebrities there – no jeans here! There is so much potential for the spotlight at events like this that the celebrities always try to wear their best and most carefully-designed outfits in order to keep their fashion images strong and in the public eye. A big trend at this years Golden Globe awards was nude-hued gowns, many of which were worn by various celebrities in attendance. These gowns, by big-name fashion designers such as Dolce & Gabbana, were worn by stars such as Heidi Klum and Jessica Biel. I expect that we will be seeing far more of these nude-hued clothes as the year progresses, because they look great.

A Man’s Bag

A handbag for a woman is really extremely useful. You have somewhere that can be available whenever you go out where you can store things so that you can keep your hand free. A man does not have this option – in fact, if he was to go out carrying a handbag, he would be quite likely to receive some very strange looks. Either that, or people would assume that he was carrying it for his girlfriend. This of course, means that men generally don’t have anywhere except for their pockets to store things such as small change, wallets, keys and so on. However, some celebrity men have bucked this trend, and started to carry bags with them. And since celebrities tend to be the trend setters in our society, maybe this means that bags for men will start to become far more popular. I can certainly see their usefulness. Amongst the big name celebs that have been seen wearing bags are Robert Downey Jr. and Hugh Jackman.

Air Jordan

One of the most popular items of casual footwear ever has to be the Nike product Air Jordan. Of course, these shoes were originally designed for, and endorsed by NBA basketball superstar Michael Jordan, not only one of the most successful basketball players of all time, but also one of the most successful sportsmen of all time. And I guess this is why the shoes have been so popular, and sell so well whenever they are released; they are just perfect, not only for basketball, but also for most other sports, especially paired with some good sports men’s socks. Indeed, just this past week, a re-release of one of the versions of the classic shoe from 1988 sold out in less than two hours! That’s just shows what an enduring, classic and popular design the shoe really is. After all, what is good enough for Michael Jordan is surely good enough for the rest of us!

Watches and Power

I find that very few fashion items immediately suggest wealth, success and power as much a a really nice-looking, shiny automatic watch. And you can see this in the advertisements created by watch manufacturers. For example, the watch company TAG Heuer has had a long list of celebrity models and ambassadors for their products, including such massive names as Brad Pitt, Tiger Woods, Maria Sharapova, Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton and Uma Thurman. Now that’s an impressive list – all big names, and all with a great deal of influence in their respective fields. The images in the adverts are also clearly designed to demonstrate qualities that TAG Heuer want to show of themselves and their products – power, sophistication, wealth. And the funny thing is that I looked at adverts for a number of different watch companies, and they all looked pretty much the same, just with different logos and text. I guess the method works!

Surie Cruise

She is probably the most photographed child of a celebrity in the whole world: Surie Cruise (5) has seen more paparazzi and popping of flashbulbs as any other famous person a whole life would. The little girl with the big sense for fashion is obviously used to be followed at every turn like her parents Katie Holmes (32) and Tom Cruise (49). As well as used to wearing socks without shoes. Because no matter where little Surie is seen, the 5-year old always wears sandals or ballerinas or other girly shoes without warm socks, for example cashmere socks, even though her mum walks around well wrapped up in a coat and sneakers. Does Surie just not like it when it comes to fashion to have warm feet (her mum says she can be really stubborn) or is she really that hardened that she thinks socks are just unnecessary? Actually her parents should have an eye on her and make sure she stays healthy, but when it comes to parenting, the two Hollywood stars have proven that they have a different view on things anyway.
