We are so used to seeing our favourite celebrities wearing expensive, designer clothing that it is very easy to forget sometimes that they don’t wear this kind of stuff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You might see Angelina Jolie wearing diamond encrusted gowns and shoes worth thousands of dollars on the red carpet at a movie premiere, or Brad Pitt wearing an awesome Armani suit at a charity event, but it’s important to remember that these kind of events are always going to bring out the showy side of the rich and famous, because to a certain extent, this is what keeps them popular, famous and wealthy. If you look a bit further, you can find plenty of examples of what celebrities wear when they are not on camera – sportswear, old t-shirts and so on – that show us that they are just human after all.

Celebrity Off Days
Lots of people like to get their fashion ideas, their new trends and styles and their hairstyle ideas from celebrities – just search for all of the celebrity fashion guides, websites and blogs that are spread all over the internet. Of course, this interest is at its greatest when there is some kind of large-scale event going on with lots of celebrities in attendance. For example, there’s always a huge crowd of fashion reporters at the red carpet on Oscars night, asking that familiar question – “so who are you wearing?” But something that is very important to remember is that these events are occasions when celebrities make a huge effort, and spend a large amount of time and money on making sure that they look as good as possible, with designer dresses and talented, expensive hair stylists and make-up artists on hand. If you really want to know how to look good every day, you need to look for pictures of these celebs on their ‘off days’ when they aren’t making a huge effort, see who still looks amazing in a sweatshirt and sports pants and use these more genuine images to create your style.
Sacha Baren Cohen’s Dictator
So the Oscars have just taken place in California once again, with the stars of Hollywood in attendance. Most of the fashions and styles being exhibited by these stars was pretty typical for this sort of event; the women wearing their expensive designer gowns and high heels, and the men mostly opting for the traditional evening black tie wear. Mostly. Because there was a certain gentleman who turned up to the ceremony in something rather different. I am talking about controversy superstar Sacha Baren Cohen, creator of comedy personas Ali G, Borat and Bruno. And now it seems like he has added another character to the list. Cohen turned up to the red carpet as the “Dictator” – the titular character from his upcoming movie of the same name. Wearing a white military-style uniform and a huge false beard, Cohen caused a substantial amount od disruption, but nothing too extreme.
Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie is one of the most famous actresses working today. Actually, scratch that, she is one of the most famous people alive today. As well as her acting accolades, she has also been called the world’s most beautiful woman, a title which has only added to her fame. This is at least partially due to the excellent fashion and style choices that she makes when she appears in public. Her marriage to Brad Pitt, a man regularly featured on ‘sexiest men’ lists and articles, has also contributed to her massive public image and presence. Jolie and Pitt have recently appeared together at the Producers Guild Awards in Beverly Hills. Angelina dressed in a full-length black gown with floral patterns and a thigh-high slit. She also wore some great rose gold jewellery.
Golden Globes ’12
So last night was the Golden Globes in Los Angeles – an event always packed to the brim with some of the biggest celebrities with the most star power in the world. And fashion is always a big deal at these events; the reporters always line the red carpet to see which fashion designers are being worn by the various celebrities there – no jeans here! There is so much potential for the spotlight at events like this that the celebrities always try to wear their best and most carefully-designed outfits in order to keep their fashion images strong and in the public eye. A big trend at this years Golden Globe awards was nude-hued gowns, many of which were worn by various celebrities in attendance. These gowns, by big-name fashion designers such as Dolce & Gabbana, were worn by stars such as Heidi Klum and Jessica Biel. I expect that we will be seeing far more of these nude-hued clothes as the year progresses, because they look great.
Hailee Steinfeld
Hailee Steinfeld is a very young American actress (aged just 14), who is already demonstrating her acting prowess, having already starred in the Hollywood movie True Grit, for which she has already received Academy Award and Bafta Award nominations – no small feat for someone so young! Like many actresses, she has also moved somewhat into the world of fashion, and has also enjoyed a huge amount of success in this medium. The major fashion designer Miu Miu recently selected Steinfeld to be the new face for its fashion products. However, this venture has not been without its ‘bumps in the road’. An image from Miu Miu’s new advertising campaign has been banned by the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority, because they think it is irresponsible. The ad depicts Steinfeld sitting on a train track. Which I suppose must mean that lots of kids are going to go sit on train tracks because they saw it in an advert!
Kate Beckinsale
Kate Beckinsale is one of England’s premier actresses, starring in such films as The Aviator, Nothing But the Truth, and the Underworld movie franchise. She is also something of an underground style icon, always looking good at awards ceremonies and parties. In an interview for the Daily Mail newspaper, she revealed that she is a massive fan of the old Hollywood style of fashion – a classic and timeless look. She especially mentioned Ava Gardner, saying that she is jealous and envies Gardner’s curves. And actually the curvy look is starting to come back into fashion, after a few years of the stick-thin figure being thought of as the ideal body shape to achieve. For fashion designers, she mentioned Gucci as being one of her favourite, citing the glamorous style of the designer.
Formal Evening Wear
Hello everyone, I just wanted to write a few words on proper evening wear, as in my experience there is a lack of knowledge on what works and what doesn’t. Celebrity fashion is the place to go to for examples. For this article I am defining formal wear as clothing worn to any formal occasion, such as weddings, important dinners and so on. I have been to a fair number of formal occasions such as these, and in my opinion simplicity is always the best way to go. Neutral colours are best, such as the classic black evening jacket for men; black is always a safe bet if you are unsure. Women should choose simple evening dresses, or gowns depending on the particular occasion. Jewellery and accessories should not be overdone as it can make you look tacky rather than sophisticated. The goal, after all, is a look of sophistication; this is the main point to bear in mind when you are deciding on what to wear. Take a look at what the celebrities have been wearing at awards ceremonies if you are really stuck
