Watches and Power

I find that very few fashion items immediately suggest wealth, success and power as much a a really nice-looking, shiny automatic watch. And you can see this in the advertisements created by watch manufacturers. For example, the watch company TAG Heuer has had a long list of celebrity models and ambassadors for their products, including such massive names as Brad Pitt, Tiger Woods, Maria Sharapova, Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton and Uma Thurman. Now that’s an impressive list – all big names, and all with a great deal of influence in their respective fields. The images in the adverts are also clearly designed to demonstrate qualities that TAG Heuer want to show of themselves and their products – power, sophistication, wealth. And the funny thing is that I looked at adverts for a number of different watch companies, and they all looked pretty much the same, just with different logos and text. I guess the method works!

Demi’s Film Premiere

A few days ago, on October 17th, Demi Moore’s new film Margin Call premiered in New York. In terms of her fashion sense and style, everything was as it usually is when it comes to Moore – she looked like a movie star. Which isn’t surprising, because she is. For the premiere, she opted for a red, three-quarter length cocktail-style dress, with a dark, floral-esque pattern. Combined with classic black high heels, she looked exactly the part. However, even all of this beauty and style could not sufficiently mask her obvious distress over husband Ashton Kutcher’s reported infidelity. Her body shape gave it away – she looks very thin, and of course this is hardly surprising. To not only go through the stress of a cheating husband, but to have to do it in front of the media cameras and reporters has to take its toll on anyone. But she actually didn’t seem to be in a terrible mood, so good on her for keeping her head up!

New Bond Villain

Like a lot of people, I am a big fan of the James Bond movie franchise. I remember watching some of the old movies when I was a kid, and they bring back fond memories of lying in a warm sleeping bag in front of the TV watching Roger Moore or Sean Connery sneaking into nasty places and dodging sharks and laser beams. Of course, this means that I was very disappointed when the upcoming Bond movie was cancelled due to financial difficulties experienced by MGM. However I am happy to see that a new Bond movie is now in the works, and even happier now I’ve seen that Javier Bardem will play the villain. I have been a fan of this Spanish actor for a long time now. He seems to have an air of classic sophistication, in the way that he acts as well as his fashion and style sense, that puts me in mind of some of the amazing actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood. He looks great whether he’s wearing a tux or just a casual shirt with jeans. Not to mention he is a very talented actor! Can’t wait to see this movie now!

The Side Parting

I remember, when I was young – at an age when I was experimenting with different hairstyles to see what suited me best – one day I decided to try out a side parting. In my naivety, I thought that I looked awesome, and it was only when I met up with a friend of mine, who immediately told me that I looked like a prat, that this obvious delusion began to fade a little. In hindsight, I think that he was probably justified in his opinion, but that’s not to say that the style itself is necessarily a bad idea. Rather, I think that it’s one of those styles that, having gone through a period of unpopularity (during which period I unfortunately chose to adopt it), is now back in fashion. There have been many sexy male celebrities that have worn the side parting. As well as various James Bond actors, Brad Pitt and George Clooney have both worn the style in the past, and you can do far worse than look like those guys.

National Sweater Day

Did you know that February the 17th 2011 was National Sweater Day in Canada? This was a national campaign designed to aid the environment and bring attention to environmental concerns, encouraging people to turn down the heating in their house/place of business and wear sweaters to compensate for the drop in temperature. The event gained lots of media attention within Canada, even prompting John Wilkinson, Ontario’s Minister of the Environment, to support and take part in the campaign. I think that this was an excellent and valuable initiative, and we should also not forget that the sweater is a classic piece of clothing, and lots of celebrities use fashionable sweaters all of the time, such as Cameron Diaz, Katie Holmes and David Schwimmer. I propose we all follow in Canada’s footsteps, turn down the heat, wear a sweater and help protect the environment.

Dynamic Clothing

One thing that can be quite difficult when you’re thinking about how to put together a particular outfit is how to ‘break the outfit up’. By this, I mean making sure the ensemble that you’re wearing doesn’t all run into each other so that it becomes boring and bland. Of course there are multiple ways of doing this. And equally, just because an outfit is all a similar colour, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is going to look bland. But there are a lot of things you can do to create a sense of movement, or a sense of structure in your clothing ensemble choice. Belts are one thing that can really help to define ‘borders’ within your outfit. Not only can belts define the waistline, they can also help to create that classic ‘hourglass’ figure, depending on how tight the belt is. Kate Middleton has been seen wearing a stunning bright red long jacket, which she ‘broke up’ using a simple black belt, which really added to the outfit’s overall effect.

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale is one of England’s premier actresses, starring in such films as The Aviator, Nothing But the Truth, and the Underworld movie franchise. She is also something of an underground style icon, always looking good at awards ceremonies and parties. In an interview for the Daily Mail newspaper, she revealed that she is a massive fan of the old Hollywood style of fashion – a classic and timeless look. She especially mentioned Ava Gardner, saying that she is jealous and envies Gardner’s curves. And actually the curvy look is starting to come back into fashion, after a few years of the stick-thin figure being thought of as the ideal body shape to achieve. For fashion designers, she mentioned Gucci as being one of her favourite, citing the glamorous style of the designer.
