Celebrity Labels

Do you guys think it’s a little bit strange that suddenly nowadays, every celebrity seems to feel the need to come up with some kind of foray into the fashion industry/fashion world? I just saw the news that rapper Kanye West has announced plans to debut his own fashion line at the Paris Fashion Week, and it made me realise that I seem to have been seeing this trend an awful lot recently. Since when did all celebrities turn into fashion designers?  There are so, so many stars that have tried producing fashion lines in the last few years – Jessica Simpson, Jay-Z, P-Diddy, Beyoncé Knowles, Victoria Beckham, Lindsay Lohan – the list goes on and on. It’s hard to think that most of these ventures are anything more than blatant opportunism, an attempt to grab more and more money out of the popularity of celebrity culture and fashion culture.

Competition Time

Singer Leona Lewis has always been a great lover of fashion, she tells us. It’s certainly quite likely – she always appears to be very fashionable and well-dressed, whether she is singing on stage, or just being herself. And now she is taking another big step into the fashion world. The singer, along with creative opportunities company Talenthouse, has just announced a competition that will surely have budding amateur and professional fashion designers alike everywhere licking their lips in anticipation. The competition is simple: design an outfit for Leona. It is open for everyone, and Leona will wear a professionally-created version of the winning design at a major performance. This is such an amazing opportunity – one that won’t come along every day – so if you are an aspiring fashion designer, get to work on some possible designs! Maybe you can try a motorcycle helmet;)

Shaved Heads

So children, today’s topic will be…shaved heads on women! Associated as it is with traditional ideas of masculinity (skinhead culture, football hooligans, ‘tough’ men), you could well be forgiven for thinking that a shaved head could never work on a woman. And in a lot of cases this notion is proved to be pretty accurate. One famously thinks of the whole Britney Spears debacle, where she shaved her head during an intense period of depression. The look did not do her any favours, although given her emotional and psychological state at the time she can perhaps be forgiven for thinking it might work. But we also cannot forget about actress Natalie Portman’s shaved head look. The actress had the haircut for her role in the movie V for Vendetta (the shave is actually shown onscreen). Portman is someone who can really make the shaved head style work; she actually looks quite good. So never assume anything!

Long Socks

A fashion trend that is still quite new, and therefore still very fashionable, is that of long, thigh-length socks. Apparently this trend was kick-started by actress Blake Lively when her character in the TV show Gossip Girls appeared on screen wearing this type of sock. Since then, many other celebrities have taken up the trend, including such big names as popstar Rihanna and singer and actress Kirsten Dunst. This type of sock obvious bears connotations with tights and stay up stockings, and there’s definitely some ideas of sexual attraction associated with these socks, as they help to define the shape of the legs. Another important asset of these longer socks is that they are awesome for the colder weather as we head into winter, as they obviously cover more of the legs than regular socks do.

Ali Lohan

I have just seen Ali Lohan’s fashion photo-shoot for fault magazine, a fashion and celebrity news magazine. To be absolutely honest with you, until just now I had never heard of Ali Lohan. Apparently she is the fashion-model-and-actress younger sister of controversial actress, pop-star and model Lindsay Lohan. And, again to be completely honest with you, I don’t really know what Lindsay Lohan has done either, although her name is better known to me than her sister’s. Anyway, the various news and gossip sites and blogs that I’ve visited are all fired up over these photos, in which Ali apparently shows off a radically different look to what she had before. To be fair, she is only 17 years old, but apparently people are discussing whether or not she has had plastic surgery to achieve her new look. Check the photos out here and judge for yourself.

Celebrity Denim

Recently there seems to have been a large fashion trend in various celebrity circles towards wearing a lot of denim. And I’m not just talking about jeans, which of course have been at the forefront of fashion in general for years and years. But lots of other denim fashion apparel pieces have been spotted adorning various celebrities in recent times, like shorts and shirts. Kylie Minogue, for example, has been seen wearing a large, baggy denim shirt while out and about, using it as a ‘throw-over’ to complete her outfit. Jessica Alba was photographed wearing denim shorts, combining them with a light, trendy tank-top. As we all know, what’s good enough for the stars is surely good enough for the rest of us. With others celebs rocking denim jackets and skirts, I think we all know what’s hot!

Gaga and Obama

How much time do you spend online each day? For me, it’s at least a couple of hours, depending on how busy I am and what else I have to do at the time. I just find the internet an absolutely fascinating bit of technology, connecting us to things that would have been impossible just a few short years ago. And this is where I go to check up on recent events and trends in the world of fashion online – it’s an information goldmine! This is how, for example, I have found out information about Lady Gaga’s run-in with President Obama. That’s right, the two met at a fundraising event held by the Human Rights Campaign a couple of weeks ago on the 25th of September. Apparently, Obama was slightly intimidated by Gaga’s 18 inch high heels. And to be fair, I think I would have been as well.

Boyfriend Style

In recent years, there has been an increasingly popular style of fashion amongst women, called the ‘boyfriend’ look. Apparently, it originates from the habit of girls borrowing items of clothing – typically sweaters, shirts or hoodies – from their boyfriends. Typically, due to average physiology, these clothes would be too large for them, meaning that these clothes are very baggy. The style grew from here, and is now a fully-fledged fashion style. I suppose the point is that girls who adopt this style are demonstrating the connection between them and their lover, and also letting people know that they have been successful in finding love. Of course, like everything else, people have been quick to cash in on this fashion movement, and there are now clothing lines available for purchase which are specifically designed to produce this look. Many celebs have flirted with this look, like Keira Knightley, Rihanna and Chloe Sevigny.

Classic Denim

There are few materials that are as popular, stylish and effortlessly timeless as denim. I expect that when most people think of denim, they will immediately associate it with jeans, which have really become very ubiquitous, both in Western culture and in the rest of the world in general. However, of course the uses of denim do not just stop with jeans. You can get denim hats, dresses, jackets, shoes, shorts and even swimwear. You can even get denim that has been worked into jewellery! As such a popular clothing material, many celebrities have been seen wearing denim fashion. Artists such as Jay Z, Diddy, Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber, sports stars like David Beckham and actresses including Rachel Bilson and Cameron Diaz have been spotted wearing denim clothing.

Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne first really came into the public eye through the reality TV show The Osbournes, starring the family of ex-Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne. Since then, Kelly has forged a career in many different mediums, including music, TV presenting and acting. She has also made considerable forays into the world of fashion, even launching her own line of clothing called Stiletto Killers. In 2006, she became the face of the fashion store chain Accessorize, selling affordable accessories. She is currently the face of Madonna’s brand ‘Material Girl’. Her own personal fashion style is very much punk/rock influenced. She usually wears her hair quite short, and it changes colour fairly frequently; she has been seen with blonde, black, brown, red and pink hair, but recently she seems to be sticking with the blonde colour.
